The car begins production next year and there is a model of it that contains rocket technology to fly over the ground.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Electric Cars, said his new Roadster project will include rocket technology.
Musk made the announcement during an interview with Joe Rogan Experience podcast host Joe Rogan Experience on Thursday, where Tesla’s CEO discussed the next-generation Tesla Roadster electric car.
“I want it to fly, and I was trying to figure out how to make this thing hover without killing people, you know,” said Musk, who has a history of making big and future promises that don’t always meet them.
“We try to make it hover but not too high. Maybe it could hover a meter above the ground, or something, if it falls, it explodes, but the passengers won’t die.”
Musk said the company will finish engineering the Roadster this year and will start shipping in 2022, echoing a tweet he posted late last month.
“We’re going to put some rocket technology in that car,” Musk said.
This isn’t the first time Musk has said the Roadster will have rocket technology. In 2018, he wrote on Twitter that there would be a version of the car with the SpaceX SpaceX Options Package, which includes “10 small propelling rockets.”
Speaking with Rogan, Musk explained that the standard Roadster will have two small rear seats similar to a Porsche, while the advanced model will have a SpaceX range where it will have a “range of thrusters” instead of two rear seats.
“At least, I’m sure we can push my rocket from behind, and that gives you three times the momentum,” he said, adding that this would be on the ground.
Musk predicted in 2016 that Tesla would make the car capable of a “full autonomous pilot engine all the way from Los Angeles to New York” by 2017.
Tesla comes up with a “full self-driving” mode, but the company states that this requires “a fully watched driver, has a hand at the wheel and is ready to take charge at any moment.
